On 16 May, activists held a vigil for Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was murdered in Malta in 2018 for her investigative reporting into endemic corruption among the country’s most powerful elites. Four years on, the fight for justice continues. 

In the latest episode of ARTICLE 19’s podcast Silenced, Nicola Kelly speaks to Daphne’s son, Matthew – who is also a journalist, and co-founded the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation – about the day that changed his life and his commitment to carrying on her vital work.

During times of war, the right to freedom of expression and the safety of journalists and media workers is of paramount importance. They facilitate the free flow of information, combat disinformation, ensure accountability for grave human rights violations, and ultimately contribute to promoting peace.

Let’s be clear: An effort to kill, wound or abduct a journalist is a war crime, and those responsible must be held accountable and brought to justice under international law.

At the 34th Special Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, ARTICLE 19 urged the global community to ensure murders of and violence against journalists in Ukraine are thoroughly investigated – and that those responsible are held to account.
